Walk the Plank Elevate Programme: Jimmy Grimes, Salford
Nov 23, 2022 - Nov 24, 2022

Practical Workshop: Jimmy Grimes ‘ Puppetry for stage, screen and theatre’. The masterclass is designed for artists and puppeteers, especially those interested in the design of mechanisms for puppets of varying scale

In this two-day workshop participants will learn 3 principles of puppet mechanism design that can be applied in infinite ways to create articulate and subtle puppets. Using examples from his recently released book, designer Jimmy Grimes will explain the key ideas that can be adapted and customised to make articulated joints, triggered actions, and a whole range of components. This practical workshop will dive right into making test pieces that participants can take home, giving them a clear understanding of how mechanisms can be used to overcome puppet design challenges.

Jimmy is a puppetry designer, maker and performer specialising in animal and creature puppets. He is known for his innovative approaches to movement in design and recently released a book on mechanism design for puppetry.

Having worked as an actor and director he moved into puppetry, winning the inaugural ‘Les Enfants Terribles’ award and also becoming Associate Puppetry Director on the West End production of ’War Horse‘. He works on screen as well as stage most recently working with Aardman Animation to create the puppetry for Coldplay’s music video ‘Daddy’. He is at home in a range of styles and disciplines, as is shown by the mix of commercial work he has done, from Doordash and Anchor Butter to Amazon Books.
