The Open Road Carnival Conference (Midlands), Nottingham
Mar 26, 2022

City Arts (Nottingham) and EMCCAN present a one-day conference exploring the barriers disabled people face accessing carnivals and carnival arts. How can we work together to remove them?

Discussions and presentations will highlight different approaches to inclusion. We will consider the varied challenges carnival organisers and disabled people face. Showcasing examples of best practice in our region, you’ll hear from companies striving to create inclusive carnival opportunities.

This is the third of three national conferences led by The New Carnival Company, Isle of Wight. Each is exploring the topic, with different key note speakers and panels sharing their experiences.

Highlights

The Nottingham event includes:

  • Keynote speaker Laura Guthrie talking about her experience of bringing her disability led theatre group, Meander, into Carnival
  • The New Carnival Company and Calalloo Carnival Arts sharing findings from their action research programmes

  • 360artists zooming in from Jamaica to share their work around creativity and inclusion

About The Open Road Carnival Project

The Open Road Carnival is an Arts Council England National Activities funded project. It explores the Social Model of Disability. This states that we are disabled by the way society is organised, rather than by our impairments or differences.

The project is led by The New Carnival Company (Isle of Wight) with partners Callaloo Carnival Arts (Mirfield), Arts Shape (Gloucester), East Midlands Caribbean Carnival Arts Network (Derby), City Arts (Nottingham), the Association of Event Management Educators and Brighton University.

The project aims to

  • identify and remove barriers to inclusion in Carnival Arts
  • influence the way that Carnival event organisers and organisations promote participatory work with disabled people
  • improve outcomes for disabled people in Carnival Arts at all levels
