The craft of making outdoor work
- Are you an artist who is looking to create work outdoors or in public space for the first time? Are you an artist who already works outdoors and wants to hone your skills and working practice?
- Would you like to explore imaginative ways that you can create relationships with audiences/participants, create intrigue and impact and work imaginatively with site and form?
This intensive residential lab aims to explore some of the unique opportunities that working in the street and in public space can afford whilst helping you to navigate the many challenges of working outside the conventional venue.
Experienced performers, directors and makers of outdoor work will share the learning of their decades of experience in this intensive and practical residential lab where, with a wide-ranging group of others you will jointly learn, explore and play.
Topics will include: Devising and working with audiences / Outdoor design and production / Site and form. Facilitated by Paschale Straiton (Red Herring), Claire Raftery (Periplum) and Pete Gunson (Pif Paf).
There will also be an opportunity for artists who are currently developing a project to explore their ideas within the learning context – so please feel free to bring an idea along with you.
Who is this for?
This workshop is aimed at professional artists with an established track record of innovative, high quality work who are looking to extend their practice in the outdoors. We are particularly keen to receive applications from individuals who are likely to be underrepresented in this area of work.

101 Outdoor Arts is an accessible venue. We have accessible parking bays, accommodation, rehearsal spaces and WC facilities. The Lab content can be captioned or signed, audio described and learning resources are available in large print. Streetwise is fully subsidised for artists through 101 Outdoor Arts professional development programme supported by The Foyle Foundation. Catering and accommodation is provided in our onsite Artists Village.
