In light of the reductions in public funding across the arts sector, and an ever more unstable climate, the roles of board members and senior staff have never been more challenging.  

This course will examine the pressures faced by chairs and directors/trustees, and explore the board’s role and responsibilities at these times. The learning from the session can be applied to a range of situations and sizes of organisations from small project-to-project companies to large venues. 

This collaborative session with both practical exercises and group work, will explore the complexities of overseeing an arts organisation. Drawing on real-world examples to look at helping develop sustainable business models for your organisation, with an understanding of the likely challenges faced by both trustees and staff.  

By the end of the session, you will:

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of Board members
  • Have strategies for getting the best from your Board
  • Have explored recruitment, induction, and engagement of board members
  • Understand relevant company and charity laws and processes relating to boards
  • Gain confidence in governing and being an effective trustee
  • Understand the professional development opportunities of being on a board
  • Understand the Chair/CEO relationship
