Green Space Dark Skies (Unboxed 2022), UK-wide
Apr 23, 2022 - Aug 13, 2022

Green Space Dark Skies is a journey deep into our natural landscapes: a series of gatherings celebrating our countryside, our right to explore it – and our responsibility to take care of it for future generations.

We’re inviting thousands of people to become ‘Lumenators’ – equipped with special low impact, high-tech lights designed especially for us. We’ll head into wild and beautiful places across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. And then together, as dusk falls, we’ll illuminate these places, creating extraordinary outdoor artworks from our lights and our landscapes. These powerful moments will be captured on camera before our closing countryside journey in September: a UK-wide finale, broadcast to millions.

Green Space Dark Skies takes place from April to September 2022. Join outdoor arts pioneers Walk the Plank and thousands of fellow Lumenators to celebrate our right to enjoy our precious countryside – and our responsibility to protect it for everyone, forever.

EXPLORE, ENJOY, PROTECT

On 24 April 1932, 90 years ago next spring, several hundred walkers set out across open land towards the Peak District’s highest point in a mass protest at laws that made their walk illegal. The Kinder Scout mass trespass proved to be a pivotal point in the right-to-roam movement, inspiring the creation of our cherished network of National Parks.

We can now visit any of the UK’s 15 National Parks and 46 Areas of Outstanding National Beauty (AONBs) at any time, and always for free. For various reasons, many of us don’t feel able to enjoy these unique spaces – but through Green Space Dark Skies, we’re encouraging people from all walks of life to forge new connections with our countryside.

Sustainability is at the heart of this UK-wide project. Green Space Dark Skies will be carbon positive, ultimately removing more carbon from the atmosphere than it produces, and we’ll leave no trace on the landscapes we visit. At the same time, we hope to inspire thousands to become active custodians of nature for the future – of our nature, and for our future.

Green Space Dark Skies is a partnership between Walk the Plank, Siemens, National Parks UK and the University of Salford, with Landscapes for Life: The National Association of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Extraordinary Bodies, the collaboration between Diverse City and Cirque Bijou, and CC-Lab.

GET INVOLVED!

We’re looking for thousands of Lumenators to help us illuminate our land, and absolutely everyone is welcome. Join us on our journeys into the UK landscape – carrying low impact lights designed by Siemens, using game-changing geo-positioning technology that will make new and exciting projects possible in the coming years.

Green Space Dark Skies will be filmed, photographed and broadcast widely online – but to help us ensure that the sites are left undamaged, only the Lumenators will be there in person to see each landscape transformed.

We’ll also be inviting our Lumenators to share with us their stories, connections and feelings about these spectacular locations. These stories are at the heart of Green Space Dark Skies, as we celebrate and protect our landscape – and make sure that everybody feels welcome to enjoy it.
