Stan’s Cafe

Life through the lens of sport (and sheepskin coats)

Project – The Commentators:
Once stalwarts of the radio, whose voices brought major sporting events into the nation’s living rooms,  The Commentators have fallen on hard times and now eke out a living wherever they can find work.

The Commentators have brought their undying passion for words and life to an eclectic  range of events  and locations including outdoor festivals,  the World Gurning Championships, the opening of the Library of Birmingham, school sports days, a New York theatre foyer and Birmingham Royal Ballet’s performance of ‘The Nutcracker’. They are regulars at Moseley Folk Festival. Their hallmark is their ability to keep talking with undimmed enthusiasm for long periods of time including commentating on a 24 hour ‘Scalextric’ race, and on 12 hours in the life of Broad Street in Birmingham. They always find people and life fascinating and always have something to say.

The Commentators are flexible – they can work in various ways, as walkabout with their own battery powered portable speaker or stationed at a central location with their words broadcast across a site.  Their commentary can also be webcast using their mixlr channel allowing people wherever they are to listen in to an event and hear what is happening in entertaining and forensic detail.

The Commentators –  professional people watching, soft surveillance, a public service – of sorts.

The Commentators are brought to you by the touring theatre company Stan’s Cafe who have been making and touring work at home and internationally since 1991.
