1 visual artist and 2 theatre clowns putting audiences at the heart of the bold and playful performances we make

Tenterhooks are a visual artist (Fergus Dunnet) and two theatre clowns (Suzie Ferguson and Diane Thornton). We thrive on the risks and rewards that come with making work that is spontaneous and which continues to evolve in performance. Most of our work is for unconventional spaces. Our starting point is usually a question about who our intended audience is and why we want to create for them. Investigating how our audiences can affect the work during its creation and performance is central to what we do. Our style is influenced by theatrical clowning, street theatre, visual storytelling and play. Our first production Call of Nature was a field-trip adventure led by a couple of fools. It toured to outdoor venues, wild spaces and community gardens across Scotland “Engaging and entertaining. Something totally new for our audiences. People loved it!” Lyth Arts Centre

Recent productions include MESS, a live-action cartoon for young audiences with complex additional support needs. It has toured widely to outdoor venues and unconventional spaces across Scotland. Recently performed as part of Glasgow International Comedy Festival.

Are Ye Dancin’, a clown show inspired by silent movies and Glasgow’s iconic dance halls, originally developed with support from the Tron Theatre to tour families’ gardens and driveways when theatres were shut during Covid restrictions. It has also toured to Merchant City Festival and Edinburgh International Children’s Festival Family Encounters.

Werewomen, a trio of wild women prowling the streets with the quick instincts of a lean hunting machine. Or they would, if only they were better at being wolves… Character clowning, parkour, slapstick and (silly) scares. It was developed with support from Surge and has toured to Surge Festival and Physical Fest.
