Breathe: 2022 will be taking over Lewisham on sites near the South Circular Road showcasing the impact of air pollution on the borough and beyond.
2022 is the 10 year anniversary of artist Dryden Goodwin’s Breathe. Made in 2012, with the art and science charity Invisible Dust, Dryden Goodwin created over 1,300 drawings of his five-year-old son inhaling and exhaling. The drawings were turned into an animation that was then projected at a large-scale on the roof of St. Thomas’ Hospital, opposite the Houses of Parliament, to highlight the need for action on air pollution.
Breathe: 2022 will be a striking multi-part new public artwork that updates the 2012 original and will appear across Lewisham on sites close to the South Circular Road. This work will relate explicitly to the death of Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, a nine-year-old girl who tragically died in 2013 after an asthma attack caused in part by air pollution. Breathe: 2022 will see people from local activist groups including Choked Up, Mums for Lungsand the Ella Roberta Family Foundation, being drawn and animated as they ’breathe’ and ’fight for breath’.
Breathe: 2022 is designed to catch your attention, start conversations and spark action as well as connect the global health emergency to the daily experiences of local Lewisham residents and activists.
