This Summer the Tall Ships are coming back to Hartlepool! After the last visit in 2010 a warm North East welcome awaits a fleet of over 30 ships and 1000’s of people as they join in and celebrate at one of the largest FREE maritime events in the UK.
Four days of at atmospheric celebrations will transform Hartlepool’s Waterfront into a spectacular display of music, art, dance and song and of course there’s the Ships!
Walk the Plank, one of the UK’s leading outdoor arts companies, will present The Tower of Light – a spectacular free show which will transform Hartlepool’s quayside into a magical theatre.
There will be a dazzling display of pyrotechnics, performance, and music during The Tall Ships Races Hartlepool 2023 on Friday, July 7 followed by a spectacular fireworks display on Saturday, July 8.
The Tower of Light celebrates the Lighthouse and the people who lived and worked in them: the Lighthouse Keepers who kept sailors safe for centuries.
A beautifully choreographed piece of outdoor theatre, The Tower of Light is centred around a giant Lighthouse and its three hapless Lighthouse Keepers who keep the Tower animated with light, fire and stunning effects.
In 1998 the last of Britain’s many lighthouses was automated. Tate Liverpool commissioned Walk the Plank to mark the departure of lighthouse keepers from their remote outposts around our coastline, and the show has toured internationally ever since.
Walk the Plank has previously delivered a dazzling array of work for major cultural opening ceremonies such as the Paralympics ceremonies, Liverpool 08 European Capital of Culture, Paphos 2017 European Capital of Culture and the closing ceremony of the Manchester Commonwealth Games 2002.
