STEAM, Multiple Locations
Sep 27, 2025 - Sep 28, 2025

As part of this special celebration, Southpaw Dance Company will present their performance STEAM at Hackworth Park in Shildon on the afternoon 27th September and Stockton High Street on the afternoon of the 28th. STEAM explores the remarkable ingenuity and determination of figures such as George Stephenson, the “Father of Railways” and Edward Pease, and those who built the railways, the daring investor who envisioned a new era of commerce and connectivity. Through a blend of contemporary dance, compelling narrative, and striking visual elements, the production captures the essence of an era where steam power began to shrink the world.

Audiences in both Shildon and Stockton will be transported through key moments of triumph and challenge, from the fervour of the railway’s conception to the adversity faced during its construction. Experience the exhilaration of the railway’s inaugural journey, engineering marvels, and societal shifts it triggered, all brought to life through Southpaw’s signature dynamic choreography and immersive storytelling. This will also include local performers who have been brought together to create this piece.

Performance locations and times are:

27 September – Hackworth Park, Shildon (12pm and 4pm)
28 September – Stockton High Street (2pm and 4pm)
