The organisers of this year’s Derby Caribbean Carnival say the next event will be even more exciting as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. The main carnival will take place on Sunday, July 20.
It will include a “vibrant procession” featuring troupes from across the UK that will wind its way through the city centre, culminating in a grand costume exhibition at Osmaston Park.
Osmaston Park will be transformed into a festival ground, offering a stage show with an international headline artist, local and national performers, sound systems, a funfair, catering stalls and arts and crafts. Tickets are now on sale.
Ahead of that, on Saturday, June 28, Derby Theatre will host the East Midland Caribbean Carnival Arts Network (EMCCAN) Regional Carnival Costume Competition, a showcase of creativity and cultural expression. This year’s competition challenges designers to “re-imagine carnival culture” with innovative costumes that blend heritage with a modern vision.
Kings, queens, princes and princesses from across the East Midlands will be there to compete for glory. The evening will also feature performances, including steelpan music and dynamic dance routines. Tickets are also on sale for this event.
Donna Briscoe-Greene, chief executive of EMCCAN, said: “This competition is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the incredible talent and creativity within our Caribbean communities. We can’t wait to see the innovative designs that emerge from this year’s theme.”
