Black Victorians, British Museum, London
Nov 4, 2023

Black Victorians explores a complex but often forgotten black presence in pre-Windrush Britain, calling attention to previously hidden figures and challenging perceptions old and new.

This powerful dance performance by Artistic Director and Choreographer Jeanefer Jean-Charles MBE is inspired by the 19th-century studio photographs of black men, women and children in Black Chronicles – The Missing ChapterBlack Chronicles is an ongoing archive research programme led by charity Autograph that is focused on unearthing photographs of black presences in Victorian Britain.

Presented in partnership with Camden Council as part of their Black History Season.

Black Victorians is produced and co-commissioned by FESTIVAL.ORG, Brighton Festival, Hatfair and Without Walls and is currently touring the UK.
