Hazel Grove Carnival is an annual event that takes place in Hazel Grove, a suburban area of Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. The carnival has a long history dating back to the early 1900s, although its exact origins are not clear.
One of the earliest references to the carnival can be found in a newspaper article from 1910, which describes a “fancy dress parade and sports” that took place in Hazel Grove on August Bank Holiday. The event was a great success, with thousands of people attending, and it continued to be held every year thereafter.
During the 1920s and 1930s, the carnival grew in popularity, with more elaborate floats and costumes and an ever-increasing number of spectators. The event also raised money for local charities and community organizations.
The carnival was suspended during World War II but resumed in 1946, and it has continued to be held every year since then, with the exception of a few years in the 1970s and 1980s when it was cancelled due to financial difficulties.
Over the years, the carnival has evolved to include a range of activities and events, such as live music, a funfair, a beer tent, and various stalls selling food, drinks, and crafts. The highlight of the carnival is the procession, which features floats decorated by local organizations, schools, and businesses, as well as marching bands, dancers, and performers.
Today, the Hazel Grove Carnival remains a much-loved tradition and a key event in the local calendar, attracting thousands of visitors from across the region.
