Akademi is a internationally renowned London-based creative company and registered charity, presenting and promoting South Asian Dance in the UK. Founded in 1979, our work reflects the richness and diversity that South Asian culture brings to the UK. Building from the legacy of 1930’s performance in London with Uday Shankar and Ram Gopal to the present day talent of Akram Khan and Aakash Odedra, South Asian dance is thriving in the Britain. Today, Akademi is a flagship organisation which has enabled the South Asian dance aesthetic to become part of the British artistic DNA, culture and creative economy through its extraordinary work.
We lead by empowering, discovering and nurturing a new generation of professional performers and cultural leaders to launch themselves into the mainstream of dance in the UK. It is a platform to experiment, develop new dance practice and a forum for critical debate disseminated through our SADAA website. Our inclusive work with young people inspires creativity, boosts academic performance and widens aspirations. Our creative work with older people provides support, increases well-being and creates new communities. Akademi generates enthusiasm for South Asian dance, globally attracting people from all walks of life. Our work reaches thousands of people each year and in 2013-14 our audiences and participants exceeded 50,000.
Akademi works to enhance the practice, understanding and appreciation of South Asian Dance across the UK within a contemporary artistic, social and educational context.
