ISAN is leading a national advocacy campaign to secure the future of the UK’s outdoor arts in partnership with the Outdoor Arts Catalyst Consortium.
The advocacy campaign has been set up to help this dynamic sector of the arts to flourish and attract new sources of funding.
We know that outdoor arts have the power to animate places, bring diverse communities and different age groups together, and inspire a sense of place and well-being, as well as bringing tangible social and economic benefits.
However, we also know that the future of the sector is increasingly uncertain, threatened by the current economic climate in which Arts Council England and funding from local authorities is reduced.
The consortium comprises six outdoor arts organisations with diverse specialisms that exemplify the wide range of artforms in the sector: EEA, Bureau of Silly Ideas, ISAN, Kazzum, Kinetika and Tangled Feet.
We are formally launching the advocacy campaign on Friday 20 June, in Greenwich, ahead of the launch of Greenwich + Docklands International Festival 2014.
Our launch is a panel discussion to debate the role of outdoor arts in place-making, ‘Society from the spectacle: the art of place-making’, chaired by Lyn Gardner, theatre critic at The Guardian.
The panel comprises: Chenine Bhathena, Senior Cultural Strategy Officer, GLA, Dr Beatriz Garcia, Head of Research at the Institute of Cultural Capital, Nathan Curry, Co-Artistic Director of Tangled Feet and our very own Helen Cadwallader, Director of ISAN.
The panel will discuss the effect on outdoor arts events on people and the psycho-geography of place, tacking questions such as:
– Does outdoor arts have a more emotional impact on audiences than other art forms?
– What are the social and economic impacts of outdoor arts?
– How can outdoor arts be used to animate places and make the public connect with an area?
– And what is the role of outdoor arts in bringing
We have gathered together an audience of opinion formers, stakeholders, high profile media and figures from the sector.
The campaign will run throughout the summer and autumn of 2014.
We want to ‘Keep outdoor arts for all!’.
