SIRF Community Carnival: ‘Junk for Joy’ (online) back to all events
While we can’t come together to create our usual community carnival parade this summer, we can still bring the joy of carnival to you! Over the next 9 weeks will we be sharing with you a series of fun carnival-inspired workshops for you to take part in at home. Then we’d like you to send us pictures and films of your creations and contributions. We’re then going to stitch them all together to create one great big virtual community carnival parade which we’ll air on Saturday 1 August at 12pm – it’ll be just like the real thing but over the airwaves!
The Community Carnival theme this year is ‘Junk for Joy’. Our talented SIRF Creative Carnival team will take you on a journey of junk discovery. They will get you transforming all available ‘Junk’ into ‘Joy’ to make your carnival costumes and accessories and they’ll also get you dancing and drumming so that you can learn your routines and join in from your own home.
Weekly junk inspired workshops with easy to follow, step by step online tutorials will be available to view via the SIRF Social Media channels. You can join in each week or catch up by viewing the workshops when you can. We have lots of exciting activities planned over the next few weeks including groove missions with Urban Kaos, DIY Drumming, Carnival crafts with household Junk.
This year we’re also delighted to announce that young people aged 5 – 25 can also use this as an opportunity to take part in an Arts Award Discover introductory award. The award is a national qualification that aims to nurture an interest in the arts, build confidence and life skills and supporting education and future employment. All you need to do is take part in the Carnival workshops, research or ask one of our Carnival artists a question and share your creations with the SIRF team. Places are limited so register your interest on the submission form below or email SIRFadmin@stockton.gov.uk
Take a look at the Carnival activities on the Carnival Workshops page.
Join us for the parade on 1 August
And then of course don’t forget to join us for the parade on Saturday 1 August. Even though we can’t all be together in person we’ll be premiering the virtual parade film at 12pm. Have fun spotting yourself and maybe some other participants you may know. We can’t wait to stitch together your wonderful creations and we’re sure it will be a parade to remember!
Send us your creation and register for Arts Award
As always, SIRF Community Carnival participants are the stars of the show. SIRF at Home Community Carnival is no different, it’s just that instead of joining you all on the high street we’ll be stitching your creations together to create a ‘Junk for Joy’ Carnival film – a virtual parade.
We would love to include as many of your creations as possible. So get ready for your close up and have your camera at the ready. Photograph or film a snippet of your fabulous junk creations, carpet disco dancing and groovy moves then simply submit them
