Sibiu International Theatre Festival, Romania back to all events
The 25th edition of the International Festival of Theater in Sibiu gathered 3,300 artists and guests from 73 countries in the city of Cibin, who presented 525 events in 73 gaming venues for a number of about 70,000 viewers per day. FITS 2018 took place during ten days, June 8-17, under the theme Passion.
On the occasion of the anniversary, the event once again enjoyed the validation of the international quality and reputation, this time by obtaining the High Patronage of the President of Romania – Centenary and the Patronage of His Royal Highness Prince of Wales.
“Under the sign of the Passion, 25 years we have tried to raise a festival that was insignificant and turn it into one of the most important in the world. You have seen how many troops and personalities have reached this year in Sibiu. As promised, not only did everyone enjoy the audience, but the expectations were overcome. It is important now to focus on the evaluation of this festival, that the Summit that will come to be a pride not only for Sibiu, but also for Romania, to put Romania where it is, in the area of the great intercultural dialogue ” , said Constantin Chiriac at the end of the edition.
Certainly the most complex part of the organization of this festival is still the technical production that involves the mobilization of huge forces, considering the dynamics of the installation of the invited productions and the weather conditions. In total, for the XXVth edition of the festival, 1400 kg of coal, 200 m³ of helium, 900 m² of carpet, 250 fences, 57 t of counterweights, over 600 units of reflectors, projectors light and intelligent lights, 10 lamps, 2000 m of cables, 500 m of scaffolding that was fitted with 40 motors and 60 speakers. All these, and the tons of decor, were handled and operated by 115 technicians.
This edition marked several anniversaries and emblematic moments including: Centenary of Romania, 80 years of existence of the British Council in Romania, 70 years since the founding of the state of Israel, as well as the prefiguration of the cultural exchange period between Romania and France in 2018- 2019. The event also hosted and hosted the public debate “Therme Forum: Theater and Architecture”, in which some of the most important architects and theater creators participated: Kengo Kuma (Kuma and Associates, Japan); Louis Becker (Henning Larsen, Denmark), Eric Bunge (nARCHITECTS, USA), Nils Fisher (Zaha Hadid Architects, UK), Andrew Bromberg (Aedas, Hong Kong), Maximilian and Daniel Zielinski (Foster + Guy Lecat (France),
On a special stage set up at the “Nicolae Balcescu” Land Forces Academy, through the American Democracy Series, Peter Sellars along with the Flex Dance Company, presented to NATO troops the show “American Dance Show / FLEXN”. Within the same project, David O’Hare, an Oscar-nominated artist, presented the show “Iliad”. This platform is developing within the FITS for two years, and the organizers intend to continue the program for the military and in future editions.
This year, Celebrity Alley was completed with six new stars, awarded to Peter Sellars (director and choreographer), Hideki Noda (director, author and actor), Wajdi Mouawad (author, actor and director), Ioan Holender (a man of culture, baritone), Mikhail Baryshnikov (actor, choreographer and dancer) and Isabelle Huppert (actress).
In the Celebrity Gala 2018, four special prizes were awarded. The “Iulian Visa” Prize was offered to Alexandra Badea for the unique voice of the young generation. The “Virgil Flonda” award came to Alexandra Maria Lara this year for its exceptional contribution to the development of the art of interpretation. The award for an exceptional partnership was given to Mr. George Banu at his 75th anniversary, and the Award for Excellence and Collaboration was given to Transylvania Bank.
